AP J Abdul Kalam Biography

 AP J Abdul Kalam Biography

Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam born on 15th October 1931 at Rameswaram, in Tamil Nadu, , specialized in Aero Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology.

Before his term as India's president, he worked as an aeronautical engineer with DRDO and ISRO. He is popularly known as the Missile Man of India for his work on development of ballistic missile and space rocket technology.[5]. In India he is highly respected as a scientist and as an engineer.

Kalam played a pivotal organisational, technical and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear test in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.[6] He is a professor at Anna University (Chennai) and adjunct/visiting faculty at many other academic and research institutions across India.

With the death of R. Venkataraman on January 27, 2009, Kalam became the only surviving former President of India.
Political views

APJ Abdul Kalam views on certain issues have been espoused by him in his book India 2020 where he strongly advocates an action plan to develop India into a knowledge superpower and into a developed nation by the year 2020. Kalam is credited with the view that India ought to take a more assertive stance in international relations; he regards his work on India's nuclear weapons program as a way to assert India's place as a future superpower.

Kalam continues to take an active interest in other developments in the field of science and technology as well. He has proposed a research programme for developing bio-implants. He is a supporter of Open source software over proprietary solutions and believes that the use of open source software on a large scale will bring more people the benefits of information technology..

Kalam's belief in the power of science to resolve society's problems and his views of these problems as a result of inefficient distribution of resources is modernistic. He also sees science and technology as ideology-free areas and emphasises the cultivation of scientific temper and entrepreneurial drive. In this, he finds a lot of support among India's new business leaders like the founders of Infosys and Wipro, (leading Indian IT corporations) who began their careers as technology professionals much in the same way Kalam did.
Personal life

Kalam's father was a devout Muslim, who owned boats which he rented out to local fishermen and was a good friend of Hindu religious leaders and the school teachers at Rameshwaram. APJ Abdul Kalam mentions in his biography that to support his studies, he started his career as a newspaper vendor. This was also told in the book, A Boy and His Dream: Three Stories from the Childhood of Abdul Kalam by Vinita Krishna. The house Kalam was born in can still be found on the Mosque street in Rameshwaram, and his brother's curio shop abuts it. This has become a point-of-call for tourists who seek out the place. Kalam grew up in an intimate relationship with nature, and he says in Wings of Fire that he never could imagine that water could be so powerful a destroying force as that he witnessed when he was thirty three. That was in 1964 when a cyclonic storm swept away the Pamban bridge and a trainload of passengers with it and also Kalam's native village, Dhanushkodi.

He is a scholar of Thirukkural; in most of his speeches, he quotes at least one kural. Kalam has written several inspirational books, most notably his autobiography Wings of Fire, aimed at motivating Indian youth. Another of his books, Guiding Souls: Dialogues on the Purpose of Life reveals his spiritual side. He has written poems in Tamil as well. It has been reported that there is considerable demand in South Korea for translated versions of books authored by him.

Kalam has also patronised grassroots innovations. He is closely associated with the Honey Bee Network and The National innovation Foundation. The NIF is a body of Government of India and operates from Ahmadabad, Gujrat. He respects all religions, including Sikhism and Hinduism.

He is a vegetarian and a teetotaller.
Kalam as an engineer

Abdul Kalam graduated from Madras Institute of Technology majoring in Aeronautical Engineering. As the Project Director, he was heavily involved in the development of India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III). As Chief Executive of Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), he also played a major part in developing many missiles of India including Agni and Prithvi. Although the entire project has been criticised for being overrun and mismanaged[10]. He was the Chief Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and Secretary, Department of Defence Research & Development from July 1992 to December 1999. Pokhran-II nuclear tests were conducted during this period, led by him.

He is one of those scientists who aims at putting technology created by him to multiple use. He used the light weight carbon-compound material designed for Agni to make callipers for the polio affected. This carbon composite material reduced the weight of the calipers to 400 grams (from its original weight of 4kgs.) Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS, Hyderabad) was the birthplace for the defence technology spin offs from Kalam's labs via the DRDL (Defence Research and Development Laboratory), DMRL (Defence Metallurgical Research Lab) and the RCI (Research Centre Imarat). Addressing a conference at Athens, Greece, Kalam told that "Seeing the children run with lighter callipers brought tears to the eyes of their parents. That was the real moment of bliss for me".
Honours

On Wednesday April 29, 2009, he became the first Asian to be bestowed the Hoover Medal, America's top engineering prize, for his outstanding contribution to public service. Kalam has received honorary doctorates from as many as thirty universities, including the Carnegie Mellon University and the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.

The Government of India has honoured him with the nation's highest civilian honours: the Padma Bhushan in 1981; Padma Vibhushan in 1990; and the Bharat Ratna in 1997 for his work with ISRO and DRDO and his role as a scientific advisor to the Indian government..

Kalam is the Third President of India to have been honoured with a Bharat Ratna before being elected to the highest office, the other two being Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Zakir Hussain. He is also the first scientist and first bachelor to occupy Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Kalam has been chosen to receive prestigious 2008 Hoover Medal for his outstanding public service. The citation said that he is being recognised for making state-of-the-art healthcare available to the common man at affordable prices, bringing quality medical care to rural areas by establishing a link between doctors and technocrats, using spin-offs of defence technology to create state-of-the-art medical equipment and launching tele-medicine projects connecting remote rural-based hospitals to the super-specialty hospital. A pre eminent scientist, a gifted engineer, and a true visionary, he is also a humble humanitarian in every sense of the word, it added.

An article by India Today published that despite being unlike the conventional Bollywood heroine Kaif "turned every adversity into opportunity and climbed the slippery pole of stardom."[3] Though she has emerged as one of the most commercially successful actresses of contemporary Bollywood, she has received mixed reviews for her acting prowess.[156] Writing for Firstpost, Anuya Jakatdar felt Kaif needed to "take on role[s] that actually challenge her" and criticised her inclination towards glamorous roles.[157] She is more favourably reviewed for her skill in dance; Meena Iyer of The Times of India said that she had emerged as "one of Bollywood's best dancers."[158] Kaif's successful career as a Bollywood actress has led to an influx of foreign aspirants seeking to establish themselves in the industry.[3] In 2013, she was the only woman who featured in the Top 10 of the Indian version of Forbes "Celebrity 100"—a list based on the income and popularity of India's biggest entertainers—with an estimated annual earning of INR637.5 million (US$10 million).[159]

Kaif is considered one of the most beautiful celebrities in India—her skin, hair and figure have been recognised as some of her distinguishing physical attributes.[160] As such, she has been ranked highly on several polls on the most attractive Indian celebrities. Kaif was named the "World's Sexiest Woman" by FHM five times during 2008-2013[161][162] and featured on Verve 's list of most powerful women in 2009 and 2010.[163][164] UK magazine Eastern Eye described her as the "Sexiest Asian Woman" for three consecutive years since 2008 and again in 2013.[165][166] She topped The Times of India 's "Most Desirable Woman" listing in 2010 and was ranked second from 2011-2013.[167][168] In 2011, Kaif was named "India's Most Beautiful Woman" by the Indian edition of People magazine.[169]

Kaif is the ambassador of many prominent brands including Slice, Nakshatra, Lux, Panasonic and L'Oréal.[170][171] She is also the first Bollywood actress to have a Barbie doll modelled after her.[172] In 2012, The Economic Times listed Kaif as one of the most prominent endorsers in India, ranking her second in their list.[173] She is one of India's highest paid celebrity endorsers. In 2014, Hindustan Times reported that she received INR50 million (US$810,000) to INR60 million (US$970,000) for each endorsement deal.[174][175]

In addition to acting, Kaif has participated in various charitable endeavours. Kaif is involved in her mother's charitable trust fund, the Relief Projects India, a nonprofit organisation aimed at rescuing abandoned baby girls and preventing female infanticide.[139] Kaif's winnings from game shows such as 10 Ka Dum and Kaun Banega Crorepati were donated to the charity.[140] In 2009 and 2010, Kaif walked the ramp to raise funds for charity as part of Salman Khan's "Being Human" show.[141][142] In order to raise funds for a new school in Madurai, Kaif recorded a music album titled "Rhymeskool", which consisted of nursery rhymes composed by A. R. Rahman.[143][144] In 2011, Kaif visited Jammu to spend time with jawan soldiers as part of NDTV's reality program Jai Jawan.[145] The following year, she visited the Cancer Patients Aid Association to promote awareness of breast and cervical cancer and presented gifts to cancer survivors.[146]

Kaif has also performed for stage shows. In 2008, she participated in Shah Rukh Khan's world concert tour "Temptation Reloaded". Also featuring Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal, the show premiered at Amsterdam in June and had its final show four months later in Dubai's Festival City Arena where the group performed to an audience of 15,000 people.[147][148] In 2009, Kaif performed at the closing ceremony of the Indian Premier League's second edition alongside Akon at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.[149] Four years later, she joined Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Pitbull in Kolkata for the opening ceremony of the Indian Premier League's sixth season.[150] For the "Temptations Reloaded" concert of 2013 in Muscat, Kaif performed with Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta to an audience in excess of 18,000.[151] Kaif has also performed to songs picturised on her at various award functions. In 2006, Kaif performed at the Global Indian Film Awards and two years later she danced to songs of Race at the 9th IIFA Awards in Bangkok.[152][153] She also performed at the 55th Filmfare Awards in 2010 and 2013 Zee Cine Awards, both in Mumbai.[154][155]

Kaif's personal life has been the subject of extensive reporting by the media. She is known to be reluctant to talk about her romantic life, saying "I have always believed that there is life before marriage and after marriage. Before marriage ... you are termed a single woman and I choose to conduct that part of my life with absolute dignity and discretion."[123] Rumours of a relationship with Salman Khan first emerged in 2003,[15] but it was not until after their breakup in 2010 that Kaif spoke of the affair, remarking that it was her first serious relationship.[124] Despite the breakup, the duo have maintained their friendship and Kaif credits Khan for giving her confidence and guiding her:[100][125]

He’s had a huge role in my career. There’s no doubt about that. I value his opinion. But as a person, Salman has had the biggest impact on my life. I became friends with him when I was young. And his persona is very strong. If I were to look back and see his impact on my life, it’s been tremendous.[126]

It was reported that the reason for the breakup was Kaif's growing proximity to Ranbir Kapoor during the filming of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.[127] Though this was denied by both Kaif and Kapoor, the nature of their relationship was extensively scrutinised by the media as they were both involved with different people.[128][129] In August 2013, intimate photographs showing Kapoor and Kaif holidaying in Ibiza, Spain were leaked by Stardust; the media saw this as confirmation of their relationship.[130] Following the leak, Kaif sent an open letter to the media saying that she was "upset, distressed and invaded" by the breach of her privacy.[131] She later acknowledged Kapoor as "an extremely important part of [her] life", but refused to comment further on the relationship.[132]

While Kaif does not own a house in India, she has bought properties in London.[133] As a British citizen, she works in India on an employment visa.[134] Kaif shares a close relationship with her family and the lack of a patriarchal figure in her life has resulted in a sense of responsibility towards them.[135] Kaif is a follower of multiple religions and claims to be a "firm believer in God". It is said that she visits Siddhivinayak Temple, Mount Mary Church and the Sufi shrine Dargah Sharif prior to the release of her films.[136][137][138]

Katrina Kaif Recent work (2012–present)

Katrina Kaif Recent work (2012–present)

In 2012, Kaif first appeared in a popular item number for Agneepath entitled "Chikni Chameli." The song was shot over ten days and saw her dance to a type of Maharashtrian folk dance called Lavani.[95] Kaif commented on the song: "It was hard work. It was very fast and it was not a style I was used to, but I took it as a challenge."[96] She next appeared in Kabir Khan's espionage thriller Ek Tha Tiger as an ISI agent who falls in love with an Indian RAW agent. Shubhra Gupta of the The Indian Express wrote of Kaif's portrayal: "Katrina is an able, animated foil to Salman, her long legs making her leaps and kicks credible" and "brings the right degree of playfulness" to her character.[97] The film received predominantly positive reviews, with Aniruddha Guha of Daily News and Analysis calling the movie "smart and stylish."[98][99] Kaif's reunion with Salman Khan was widely publicised as it was their first film together after their breakup.[100] The film emerged as a hugely successful project. With worldwide earnings of INR3.1 billion (US$50 million), Ek Tha Tiger became the highest grossing film of the year.[101][102]

The same year, Kaif worked with Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma in Yash Chopra's swan song, the romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan.[103] On working with Chopra, Kaif remarked that he "undoubtedly is the king of romance and I have always admired the way he presents his heroines. It was always a dream to work with him and the reality is even better."[104] Kaif portrayed Meera, a woman who makes a promise with God to end her rendezvous with her coma-stricken lover, given that he survives. While the movie generated mostly positive reviews, Kaif's portrayal attracted a mixed reception.[105] While Lisa Tsering of The Hollywood Reporter called her performance "charismatic and physical," Rohit Vats published that "Meera's role was a difficult one and Katrina falls short in emotional scenes. It seems Katrina still doesn't feel very easy in front of the camera and has difficulty with complex expressions."[106][107] Commercially, the film proved a box office hit with revenues of INR2.11 billion (US$34 million) worldwide.[108] Her performances in Ek Tha Tiger and Jab Tak Hai Jaan earned Kaif her second Screen Award for Best Actress (Popular Choice).[109]

In 2013, Kaif appeared in the action thriller Dhoom 3. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film saw Kaif as a circus performer alongside Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra.[110] In preparation for her role, Kaif engaged in an intense regime of pilates, functional training and Aerial straps over the course of one year.[111] The movie attracted mixed reviews from critics, as did Kaif's brief role in the film.[112] Deepanjana Pal of Firstpost questioned Kaif's willingness to take on the part and remarked that "[s]he's barely there in the film."[113] Her performance was more favourably reviewed by Taran Adarsh: "Katrina looks ethereal and her acrobats will catch you unaware. Moving with incredible grace in dance numbers, she's sure to astonish the viewer with her dexterous act no end."[114] Earning over INR5 billion (US$81 million) worldwide, the film emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time.[115][116] Kaif's next appearance was in Siddharth Anand's Bang Bang! (2014), a remake of the 2010 action comedy Knight and Day.[117] Kaif played the role of a bank receptionist who inadvertently meets and falls in love with a mysterious man (played by Hrithik Roshan) on a secret mission. Raja Sen of Rediff.com was disappointed with her performance, calling it "insufferable."[118] While a commercial success, financial analysts observed that despite a strong opening, the film failed to meet expectations regarding its box office performance.[119]

As of November 2014, Kaif has completed work on Kabir Khan's post 26/11 counter-terrorism drama Phantom with Saif Ali Khan.[120] She is filming for Anurag Basu's comedy-mystery film Jagga Jasoos alongside Ranbir Kapoor.[121] She is also scheduled to film for Abhishek Kapoor's adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations entitled Fitoor, in which she will play a role based on the character of Estella Havisham with Aditya Roy Kapur and Rekha.[122]

Katrina Kaif New York and other roles (2009–11)

Katrina Kaif New York and other roles (2009–11)

After a string of films in which she was cast merely for her glamour quotient, Kaif's role in the 2009 terrorism drama New York brought her recognition for her acting.[62] The Kabir Khan-directed film narrates the story of three friends and how their lives are changed when one of them is wrongly detained after 9/11. Cast alongside John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Irrfan Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Kaif portrayed the character of Maya, a college student who is later married to a terrorist. On her role, Kaif remarked that she identified with Maya as she felt similar isolation while growing up in London because of her skin colour.[63] Kaif further opined that she had acted in too many "arm candy" roles and was looking to work in more prominent roles like that of New York.[64] The film did well at the box office and received positive reviews.[65][66] Critic Subhash K. Jha mentioned that Kaif "comes into her own as an actress of substance ... From the carefree effervescent campus girl to the anguished wife, Katrina makes the journey look plausible all the way."[67] New York earned Kaif her first Filmfare nomination for Best Actress.[68] She also appeared in a cameo for India's first underwater thriller, Blue.[69]

Rajkumar Santoshi's hit comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) saw Kaif star opposite Ranbir Kapoor as an orphan who is forced to marry a rich man against her wishes.[70] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama commented that "Katrina Kaif continues to surprise ... She scores in both emotional and light scenes," adding that her chemistry with Kapoor is "electrifying."[71] Her final release of the year was in Priyadarshan's multistarrer comedy De Dana Dan, alongside Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Sameera Reddy and Neha Dhupia.[64]

In 2010, Kaif first appeared in Prakash Jha's political thriller Raajneeti, in which Kaif acted alongside an ensemble cast consisting of Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Arjun Rampal, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpai and Sarah Thompson. The film took inspiration from the Indian epic The Mahabharata and Mario Puzo's 1969 novel The Godfather.[72] Set against the backdrop of Bhopal, the picture narrated the story of a fiercely fought election campaign between two warring parties who attempt to seize power through manipulation, corruption and treachery. Prior to the film's release, the media speculated that Kaif's character was based on Sonia Gandhi; this was denied by Kaif. In preparation for her role as Indu (a politician loosely based on Draupadi), she watched election campaign videos of Priyanka Gandhi to study the body language of political figures and their interactions during campaigns.[73][74] The film met with predominantly positive reviews.[75] Rajeev Masand found the film to be "thrilling and gripping," though in one review, Namrata Joshi complained about the poor depiction of Raajneeti 's female characters.[76][77] On Kaif's performance, Nikhat Kazmi mentioned that she is "carefree and camera-unconscious."[78] The movie received a total collection of INR1.4 billion (US$23 million) at the box office and emerged as a blockbuster.[49][79] She also appeared opposite Akshay Kumar as an aspiring actress in Farah Khan's slapstick comedy Tees Maar Khan.[80] Despite overwhelmingly poor reviews from critics and negative media perception, the film was moderately successful at the box office.[81][82] Kaif's performance was not received well. Renuka Rao of Daily News and Analysis said that her "drama queen act is performed ... poorly" but mentioned that Kaif "does full justice" to her popular item number "Sheila Ki Jawani."[83][84] For her 2010 appearances, Kaif was awarded the Screen Award for Best Actress (Popular Choice).[68]

In 2011, she was seen alongside Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol and Kalki Koechlin in Zoya Akhtar's coming-of-age dramedy Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.[85] The film narrates the story of three friends on a bachelor trip, and how the workaholic nature of one of these friends is overcome with the help of Laila (played by Kaif). The movie emerged as a box office hit, with worldwide earnings of INR1.53 billion (US$25 million).[49][86] The film and Kaif's performance were well received by critics.[41][87] Richard Kuipers of Variety commented that she is "delightful as the sweet-natured girl who inspires everyone to look in the mirror and do something about it."[88] Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was one of the most awarded films of the year and received numerous Best Film accolades at major Indian award functions.[89]

She next featured in Yash Raj Films' romantic comedy Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011) opposite Imran Khan and Ali Zafar.[90] Kaif was cast as Dimple Dixit, a "talkative" and "unpredictable" girl. She described the role as challenging because the character's personality traits contrasted with her own.[91] While the film earned mixed reviews, Kaif was generally praised for her portrayal.[41][92] The book Mother Maiden Mistress describes Kaif's role as one of the more interesting female characters of the year and Gaurav Malani of The Economic Times wrote that the film was watchable because of "Katrina's live-wire energy wherein she never goes overboard and keeps bustling with vivacity through the runtime."[93][94] For her performance, Kaif received her second Filmfare nomination in the Best Actress category.[68]

Katrina Kaif Commercial success (2007–08)

 Commercial success (2007–08)

Kaif's career prospects changed in 2007 when she appeared in four Hindi films, all of which were successful at the box office.[41] In an interview with The Indian Express, Kaif opined that Vipul Amrutlal Shah's romantic comedy Namastey London marked an important milestone, claiming that "for the first time, [she] had a dominating role."[6] She used her experiences in London as a reference point for her role as a spoilt British Indian girl who is intent on marrying her self-centred British boyfriend despite her parents' disapproval.[42] Critics were divided in the film itself,[43] though Kaif's performance attracted favourable reviews.[41] Sukanya Verma wrote that she "suits the role to the T" and "brings the zingy mix of her character alive with style and substance."[44] Kaif's chemistry with co-star Akshay Kumar also generated immense appreciation, with Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India describing their pairing as "refreshing."[45]

She next appeared in a supporting role for the Anil Sharma-directed melodramatic sports film Apne. The film was highly anticipated as it marked the first time Dharmendra featured in a film with his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.[46] After Apne, she reunited with director David Dhawan for the comedy Partner (an unofficial remake of Hitch), where she starred alongside Salman Khan, Govinda and Lara Dutta.[47] With a worldwide revenue of INR1.03 billion (US$17 million), the film emerged a blockbuster.[48][49] Kaif's final release of the year was Anees Bazmee's multistarrer comedy Welcome with Akshay Kumar, Nana Patekar, Mallika Sherawat and Anil Kapoor. The film earned little praise from critics but became Kaif's second consecutive blockbuster with worldwide earnings of INR1.16 billion (US$19 million).[41][48][49] Despite these films performing well at the box office, Kaif's roles were noted to be similar by Shoma Chaudhury of Tehelka, who called her "unabashed eye-candy" and added that she was "a pretty prop in Welcome" and "more of the same in Partner and Apne."[9]

In 2008, Kaif had three releases, the first of which was Abbas-Mustan's action thriller Race. The film follows the story of two stepbrothers-turned-rivals who are in contention for their father's insurance payment. Kaif enacted the role of Ranveer's (played by Saif Ali Khan) double-crossing secretary and the lover of his stepbrother (played by Akshaye Khanna). Race continued Kaif's slew of successes,[50] though Nikhat Kazmi noted that "Katrina is too pale as the blousy secretary." Kazmi was more appreciative of the film, praising its "super cool look [and] testosterone-high action sequences."[51] Kaif was next seen in Anees Bazmee's action comedy Singh Is Kinng, as Akshay Kumar's love interest and Ranvir Shorey's fiancée. With worldwide earnings of INR1.25 billion (US$20 million), the film was declared a super hit, making it Kaif's sixth consecutive success at the box office.[25][49][50] Kaif earned mixed reviews for her performance.[41] In a particularly critical review, Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN commented that "Katrina Kaif is an eyesore ... her acting so weak you want to urge her to watch everyone from Madhubala to Madhuri so she might pick up a few tricks."[52]

Kaif's final release of 2008—the Subhash Ghai-directed drama Yuvvraaj—was a major failure at the box office.[50] To prepare for her role as a cellist, Kaif practised playing the instrument alongside orchestra members.[53] Her portrayal of a girl forbidden by her father from marrying her poor lover was well received by critic Sonia Chopra, who opined that "Katrina is wonderful, plays the cello convincingly, and looks ethereal."[54] Despite the film receiving a mixed critical reception, its script was added to the library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences due to its artistic merit.[55][56]

With the exception of Boom, Namastey London and Singh is Kingg, Kaif's voice was dubbed in her early films as she was inarticulate in Hindi and other Indian languages.[57][58] While Kaif was a part of a string of successful movies at this stage, film critics observed that she had little to do as her films were generally male-centric.[25][59] She also received mostly negative reviews for her acting.[60][61] On her series of glamorous roles, Kaif reflected that her "first few films were really a process of learning ... There was no target."[3]

Breakthrough and initial success (2004–06)

 Breakthrough and initial success (2004–06)

After the failure of her first Bollywood venture, Kaif took on the Telugu film Malliswari (2004). Cast opposite Daggubati Venkatesh, the film saw Kaif play the titular role of a princess who is forced to flee from her murderous caretaker. She reportedly received INR7.5 million (US$120,000) for the film, the highest amount paid to an actress in the South industry at the time of release. Despite negative reviews for her acting, the film emerged as an economic success.[28][29]

The following year, Kaif appeared briefly as the girlfriend of Abhishek Bachchan's character in Ram Gopal Varma's political thriller Sarkar.[30] She next featured alongside Salman Khan, Sushmita Sen and Sohail Khan in her first major Hindi film role in Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?. Directed by David Dhawan, the film was an adaptation of the romantic comedy Cactus Flower.[31] The feature was a profitable venture[32] and, for her role as a model with suicidal tendencies, Kaif received the Stardust Award for Breakthrough Performance – Female.[33] Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com reviewed: "Katrina's Disney princess-like charm adds to her adorable screen presence."[34] She followed this with her second Telugu release, Allari Pidugu, where she played a small role alongside Balakrishna.[35]

In 2006, she was paired opposite Akshay Kumar for the first time (the duo later appeared in numerous successful films together)[36] in Raj Kanwar's financially unsuccessful film Humko Deewana Kar Gaye.[37] The film tells the story of two like-minded strangers who fall in love despite being engaged to other people. A reviewer writing for Sify said that "Katrina is passably competent in a tailor-made role, giving a mild emotional spin to a couple of scenes" but added that she was overshadowed by the film's supporting actresses.[38] Kaif also appeared alongside Mammootty in a Malayalam film—the crime thriller Balram vs. Tharadas—which was a profitable production.[39] Rishi Raj Singh of The Hindu was impressed with Kaif's performance and published that she is "marvellous" in her role.[40]

Modelling and film debut (up to 2003)

Kaif first expressed interest in a modelling career as a teenager, when she won a beauty contest in Hawaii. She subsequently received her first assignment as a model—a jewellery campaign.[11] She began to model professionally in London, where she worked for various freelance agencies and featured regularly at the London Fashion Week.[3] Her appearance at a fashion show attracted the attention of London-based filmmaker Kaizad Gustad. He selected Kaif for a role in the English / Hindi erotic heist film Boom, alongside an ensemble cast consisting of Amitabh Bachchan, Gulshan Grover, Jackie Shroff, Madhu Sapre and Padma Lakshmi.[12][13] While shooting for the film in India, Kaif began receiving other offers and decided to stay in the country.[14] In 2003, she received recognition as a model after walking the ramp for Rohit Bal at the India Fashion Week.[15] The same year, Kaif appeared in the first edition of the Kingfisher Calendar, a popular print campaign.[16] She soon established a successful modelling career in India after endorsing prominent brands like Coca-Cola, LG, Fevicol and Samsung.[17]

Kaif's successful modelling stint led to immense anticipation surrounding her Bollywood debut.[13] Boom (2003) had its first screening at the Cannes Film Festival and was also heavily promoted at the event.[18][19] However, ten days prior to the film's release, it was reported that pirated VCDs of the film's uncut version were being sold on the black market.[20][21] Boom failed commercially and critically.[22][23] Kaif's enactment of a supermodel ensnared in the Mumbai underworld was not well received, with Ziya U. Salam of The Hindu attributing the poor performances of the film's leading ladies to "the vacuity of their expressions."[24] Post-release, Kaif was written off due to her poor Hindi and thick British accent.[25] Kaif later dismissed the film, saying: "I don't count Boom among important happenings in my life. When I signed this film, I didn't know much about India and its film audience."[26]

Kaif was later offered a number of modelling assignments,[26] but filmmakers were hesitant to cast her due to her poor command of Hindi. In one such incident, she was unceremoniously removed from the film Saaya.[27] Subsequently, Kaif began working on her diction through Hindi classes.[26]To Get Daily Update Of Our Blog Plz Follow Our Blog And Give Your Comment . Early Life And Backgroun Of Katrina kaif

Early Life And Backgroun Of Katrina kaif

Katrina Kaif was born in Hong Kong—with her mother's surname Turquotte (also spelt Turcotte)—on 16 July 1983.[a][1][2][3] According to Kaif, her father Mohammed Kaif is a British businessman of Kashmiri Indian decent, and her mother Suzanne (also spelt Susanna) is an English lawyer and charity worker.[3][4][5][6] Kaif has seven siblings—three older sisters (Stephanie, Christine and Natasha), three younger sisters (Melissa, Sonia and Isabel), and an older brother named Michael.[4][6] Isabel is also a model and actress.[7] Kaif's parents divorced when she was very young, after which her father moved to America. She says that her father had no influence on Kaif or her siblings while growing up as they were raised by their mother.[3][6][8] On her father's absence in her life, Kaif stated: "When I see friends who have wonderful fathers who are like pillars of support for their families, I say, if only I had that. But instead of complaining, I should be grateful for all the other things I have." In a 2009 interview to The Indian Express, Kaif stated that she was not in touch with her father.[6]

At a young age, Kaif's mother decided to "dedicate her life to social causes" which led to the relocation of their family to numerous countries for varying lengths of time. After her birth in Hong Kong, Kaif and her family moved to China and then to Japan. From there, she went to France when she was eight and lived for a few months at a time in Switzerland, Poland, Belgium and other European countries. Subsequently, Kaif moved with her family to Hawaii and eventually to her mother's home country of England.[8] Due to their constant relocation, Kaif and her siblings were home-schooled by a series of tutors.[9] Though it is often assumed that Kaif grew up in London, she lived there for only three years before migrating to India.[8] According to Kaif, after relocating to India she changed her surname to that of her father's as she believed it would be easier to pronounce.[10]

Kaif's background is enshrouded in mystery. Several sources have questioned the authenticity of her claims of having a Kashmiri father.[3] In a 2011 interview to Mumbai Mirror, Ayesha Shroff (producer of Kaif's debut film Boom) accused Kaif of fabricating her history. She said: "We created an identity for her. She was this pretty young English girl, and we gave her the Kashmiri father and thought of calling her Katrina Kazi. We thought we'd give her some kind of Indian ancestry, to connect with the audience ... But then we thought that Kazi sounded too... religious? ... Mohammad Kaif was at the top, and so we said, Katrina Kaif sounds really great."[5] Kaif responded by calling her comments "hurtful."[3]

Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif (pronounced [kəˈʈriːnaː ˈkɛːf]; born Katrina Turquotte, also spelt Turcotte; 16 July 1983) is a British Indian film actress and model. She is primarily known for her work in Bollywood films and has appeared in Telugu and Malayalam films. In addition to being one of Bollywood's highest-paid actresses, Kaif is cited in the media as one of India's most attractive celebrities.

Born in Hong Kong, Kaif and her family lived in numerous countries for varying lengths of time before she migrated to India. Kaif received her first modelling assignment as a teenager, and later pursued a career as a fashion model. During a show in London, filmmaker Kaizad Gustad cast her in his film Boom (2003), a critical and commercial failure. While shooting for the picture in India, Kaif began receiving other assignments. She soon established a successful career as a model, but filmmakers were hesitant to cast her due to her poor grasp of Hindi. After appearing in the successful Telugu film Malliswari (2004), she earned commercial success in Bollywood with the romantic comedies Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? (2005) and Namastey London (2007) and garnered praise for her performance in the latter. She followed with a series of box office hits, but was criticised for her acting, repetitive roles and inclination to male-centric films.

A performance oriented role in the 2009 terrorism drama New York was more well received, earning her praise and a Filmfare Award for Best Actress nomination. She subsequently featured in more prominent roles in successful films like Raajneeti (2010), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011) and Ek Tha Tiger (2012). She also featured briefly in the action thriller Dhoom 3 (2013), which emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics for her acting prowess, she has established herself as a commercially successful actress of Hindi cinema.

In addition to acting, Kaif is involved with her mother's charity and participates in stage shows. She is known to be particularly guarded about her personal life, which has been the subject of extensive media scrutiny. Kaif's background has also been the topic of much discussion, with various sources accusing her of fabricating her history.
